Thank you.. well written and well cited. I was hoping to find something as well-informed as this after reading a news article that appeared in my FB newsfeed this morning - http://bangordailynews.com/... I was sickened at how freely and often this article glorifies such dangerous behavior. I do not express my views on this subject out of morality nor look down on the athletes or spectators who participate in this sport as well. I appreciate the right to be an individual and respect that others have the right to do the same. That being said... It is out of genuine concern for these young athletes that I am compelled to respond when a local newspaper highlights an event, describing it as, "where the blows and blood flowed freely". It was not difficult to recognize a theme woven throughout the article with statements such as, "clobbered each other in a brutal first round that featured key blows to the head", "let loose a barrage of punches on a dazed Peterson", "unloaded blow after blow on John Raio’s head", "unleashing a flurry of punches to Ortolani’s head after he was sprawled on the floor", "Ortolani didn’t move for a few moments before he got to his feet", "hammered away at Claroni’s head", "had trouble getting up off the floor before he was declared the winner", "pounding away with his fists on Connaughton’s exposed head", "Lacy of Bangor tackled Greenway, never let him up and pounded on his head before the official called the fight in Lacy’s favor.", and just in case readers didn't have enough of a visual yet ,"Stamback pounded away on Langston’s head". This behavior, quite simply put is violent! These people are assaulting each other! This would otherwise be considered illegal. I don't think I need to mention medical and mental health concerns. I cannot understand how we can consider ourselves a modern, civilized society and endorse this type of activity at the same time.
